What is the NKC?
National Kennel Club

Over the last few years NKC has become one of the main registries for the American Bulldog.  There are many American Bulldog specialty shows each year all over the country.  This allows American Bulldog enthusiasts to come out and show their dogs, earn Championship titles and hang out with other like minded people.  Unfortunately there are fewer NKC shows on the West Coast and many California bulldoggers have missed opportunities to show their dogs.

(from NKC website)
Since 1969 the National Kennel Club (NKC) has operated to help dog owners register any purebred dog. The NKC has been fair and impartial to all breeders, dog owners, and the various breeds. With the NKC rare breeds may be shown with equal status as well as the major breeds. The NKC licenses all-breed dog shows, events for Coon dogs, Beagles, Squirrel dogs, Bird dogs, Fox dogs, licensed dog kennels, show judges, and other dog related events.
NKC show hosted by Pacific Coast American Bulldog Club
2 Day NKC American Bulldog Specialty Show
November 27 & 28, 2009
General Purpose:

  • To improve breeding of purebred dogs of all breeds establishing a stud file of all dogs registered with NKC, by encouragement to breeders to use only the best conformation and temperament in their breeding program.
  • To promote competition in various fields of dog-oriented activities in a friendly sporting atmosphere.
  • To better canine life by making owners aware of the new ideas in dog care.
  • To encourage registration of all purebred dogs so that ancestry and traits both desirable and undesirable can be identified.
  • To encourage dog owners to learn better methods of care, feeding, and training of dogs.
  • To promote enjoyment of leisure time in association with dogs and dog activities.
  • To promote conservation of our natural resources through combined efforts by dog clubs.
  • By restocking game birds and animals where unwise acts have reduced their numbers below desired levels.
  • Protection of animals against poachers and greedy hunters.
  • Stimulate hunting for pleasure and champion points instead of hides of animals.
  • Educate the public to respect and appreciate the efforts of the state game and fish commissions.
What to expect

An NKC conformation show is a little more laid back then many other conformation shows. It is very friendly to the novice handler and is a great place to start showing your bulldog.  You can dress up but many people do not.  It is okay to wear jeans and a T-shirt while showing in NKC.

If you are unsure about something ask questions.  Most exhibitors are very friendly and love to talk about their dogs.  Just be aware that some people may be a little stressed especially before they go in the ring.

Bait is not allowed in the NKC show ring.  Bait consists of toys, food, or anything else a handler might use to get their dog's attention.  You can talk to your dog and touch your dog as much as you need to.
    Things you will Need:

  • A purebred NKC registered American Bulldog
  • A handler that is physically capable of controlling the dog
  • A leather lead or slip collars either of fabric, leather or chain to maintain control. No harness or pinch collars allowed.  Make sure that the leash and collar you use is sturdy enough to control your dog.
  • A good attitude!

You definitely don't need to be an expert or a pro to
show your dog.  Most judges are very willing to help
first time exhibitors.  If you aren't sure about entering
just go ahead and try!  It is a lot of fun!  The dog above
took Reserve Best in Show at the 2008 WABC NKC
and both he and his owner were brand new to showing!
What if my American Bulldog isn't NKC registered?

No problem!  We will be offering day of show registration for all American Bulldogs.  If your dog is registered with another registry such as ABA or UKC you can bring those papers along.  If your dog is not currently registered with another registry or you can't find their papers our breed inspector can inspect your dog to determine whether he/she is a purebred American Bulldog.  You will need to fill out some paperwork and provide a pedigree for your dog.  Day of show registration will be $8.
